In this article today, we will highlight the best large SUVs in 2024, taking into account many factors that matter to every consumer.

When talking about large SUVs, there’s more to it than price and sheer size when choosing one.

First, it’s about what’s under the hood. Some are built on a truck chassis on a frame, which would be the traditional and literal definition of an “SUV.”

Others use a car-like unibody structure, making them a crossover. But what really matters is how you use it.

For most families, a large three-row crossover will be your best bet. It has plenty of passenger and cargo space, gets better fuel economy, and has better handling and ride than traditional large SUVs.

It’s also cheaper. On the other hand, traditional large SUVs like the Chevrolet Tahoe and Ford Expedition are better suited for heavy-duty tasks like towing. Most now have larger third rows than large crossovers, while extended versions like the Chevrolet Suburban have much more cargo capacity behind the three rows.

As for large luxury SUVs, they also fall into these two categories, with the options being mostly truck-based.

You’ll find our list of the best large SUVs of 2024 below, divided into three categories: large family crossovers, large traditional SUVs, and large luxury SUVs, which includes both body types.

The best large family crossovers

Honda Pilot 2024

""

Its features: exceptional storage and cargo space – unique functions for the second row – refined driving – versatile Trail Sport – advanced four-wheel drive system

Disadvantages: Substandard acceleration with poor transmission and sluggish engine response – mediocre driver assistance technologies

The Honda Pilot has been completely redesigned for 2023. It has maintained its family-friendly design and overall focus, but added a touch of elegance (especially in the Trail Sport model) that makes it stand out much better among larger crossovers.

The Honda Pilot’s restrained trim and classic fit feel clean compared to the more crowded Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, and Subaru Ascent.

But let’s talk about practicality, which is ultimately the Pilot’s best attribute. While all other three-row SUVs have owners choosing between a second-row seat or captain’s chairs (and thus six-, seven-, or eight-passenger capacity depending on the vehicle), the Pilot’s removable second-row middle seat means every Pilot model can It should be a car for seven or eight passengers.

This middle seat even fits under the cargo floor in all models except the Trail Sport (the full-size all-terrain spare tire takes up too much space).

There’s also plenty of thoughtful, family-friendly storage throughout the vehicle and a well-rounded driving experience that matches the Honda standard. All this makes it one of the best large SUVs in 2024.

Kia Telluride 2024

""

Its advantages: More third-row and cargo space – Well-implemented technology – Well-crafted interior – Doesn’t feel like a family car

Disadvantages: No hybrid or high-performance version available – X-Pro’s firm ride

If you’ve already read the above description of the Hyundai Palisade, you’ve been told it has mechanical commonalities with the Telluride and that it shares the same core strong points: space, technology, quality and value. It also does so to an extent that outperforms its competitors.

Of the two, the Kia Telluride received a greater share of awards, largely because its design is appreciated by more people.

Basically, elegance is king. There is more than a touch of the Range Rover design philosophy in its large proportions and distinctive details.

What’s more, you’ll find “Telluride” written across the hood, just like the Range Rover. Basically, the Kia Telluride doesn’t look like a three-row family car despite it being one of the best three-row large family SUVs of 2024.

Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid 2024

""

Its advantages: Exceptional fuel economy for a three-row SUV – Great power for a three-row SUV – Lots of space behind the third row

Disadvantages: Some problems in the infotainment system – Expensive

While the Toyota Highlander was previously on this list, that’s because its hybrid model offers exceptional fuel economy that none of its competitors can match.

However, you’re sacrificing the third row and cargo space for that fuel efficiency.

That’s not the case with the new Toyota Grand Highlander, which is a separate model despite its name, and is much larger.

It is available with Toyota’s traditional fuel-efficient hybrid engine that achieves fuel consumption of 7.12-6.5 l/100 km, but it also offers a high-performance hybrid powertrain that delivers 362 hp, a number that few competitors come close to.

The Grand Highlander is an easy alternative here to its smaller sibling. The hefty price tag gives us pause, but at least you’re getting plenty of family hauling. So we think it deserves to be on our list of the best large SUVs in 2024.

The best traditional large SUV

Chevrolet Tahoe / Suburban 2024 – GMC Yukon

""

Its features: fuel-efficient diesel engine – more third-row space than large crossovers – luxurious interiors

Disadvantages: Many driver assistance features are not available on less expensive models

The Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban have long been best-selling large SUVs, but those sales have not reflected their strength compared to competitors.

However, the switch to an independent rear suspension for the all-new generation for 2021 has radically transformed it.

The third row in the Tahoe and its twin, the GMC Yukon, goes from being almost unridable to one of the largest rows in any car. The cargo volume has become larger, including in the Suburban and Yukon XL, which have longer dimensions and a lower cargo floor. Ride and handling are also greatly improved.

Along with suspension improvements, there’s a unique diesel engine option that gives you crossover-like fuel economy and a just as competitive interior.

The GMC Yukon even gets its own interior for the first time, but it’s exclusive to the Denali model. Add it all up, and you’ve got a full-size SUV family that we can now recommend on our list of the best large SUVs of 2024.

Ford Expedition 2024

""

Features: Silky-smooth V6 with class-leading torque and fuel economy – Largest third row of GM SUVs

Disadvantages: Interior design that is less attractive and luxurious than the Tahoe/Suburban/Yukon

Before GM redesigned the Tahoe/Yukon, recommending the Expedition was an easy choice. Now, the playing field has largely been leveled between the two, with the balance tipped toward GM’s SUVs in terms of interior design, quality, infotainment features and available diesel engine.

While not much can be done about the latter, at least the Ford Expedition gets an updated interior for 2022. Ford also still has the larger, more comfortable third-row seats, as well as its silky-smooth 3.5-liter turbocharged V6.

This engine generates 375 hp and 637 Nm of torque. Besides having class-leading torque, its horsepower also beats most competitors, including GM’s 5.3-liter V8 found in most of its models.

Better yet, the Ford Expedition is more fuel efficient than GM’s V8 engines and much better than the fuel-guzzling Jeep Wagoneer.

In other words, just because the Expedition has been around for a while doesn’t mean you should ignore it, it’s one of the best large SUVs of 2024.

Jeep Wagoneer 2024

""

Its features: the best legroom in the third row – more cargo space than the third row on this list – beautiful interior design – comfortable driving

Its disadvantages: a soft suspension system with a lot of body movement – the “L” model is very large – difficulty in parking the car

Do you want a big SUV? Well, none are bigger than the Jeep Wagoneer and its ultra-luxury version, the Grand Wagoneer.

In fact, the extended-length Jeep Wagoneer L and the larger Grand Wagoneer L are the larger options in this segment.

As a result, they have the most spacious and comfortable third-row seat on this list, and the cargo area behind the third row is also more generous.

The Wagoneer also features the best interior design in its class, as it is not much different from the design you get in the Grand Wagoneer, which competes greatly with Cadillac and Lincoln.

The good news for 2024 is that the entire Wagoneer lineup gets Jeep/Ram’s new “Hurricane” in-line turbocharged V6 engine that produces more power and torque than the old V8 options while achieving much better fuel economy.

Thanks to these features, it has reserved a seat for itself on the list of the best large SUVs in 2024.

The best large luxury SUVs

Cadillac Escalade 2024

""

Its features: 38-inch OLED screen – diesel engine – towing capacity – third row suitable for adults – Super Cruise system

Disadvantages: Fuel efficiency with a V8 engine – huge size hinders maneuvering

All-new for 2021, the Escalade has been radically improved and more competitive over time.

The switch to an independent rear suspension transformed the third row from unridable to one of the largest on the market, while also benefiting ride, handling and cargo space.

Likewise, the design is as stylish as one would expect from this expensive price point in terms of materials, design and technology.

Specifically, there are 38 inches of three OLED displays surrounding the driver. The Escalade is also available with GM’s highly advanced Super Cruise hands-free driving technology.

Another key item is the diesel engine option, which delivers the same 623Nm of torque as the standard 6.2-litre V8, but saves a lot of money on fuel, even with diesel prices rising.

It’s one of the best large SUVs you can get in 2024.

Lexus TX 2024

""

Its features: the largest third row in any luxury crossover – also large cargo space – multi-hybrid – first-class build quality

Disadvantages: It’s basically a Toyota Grand Highlander with sleeker paint and nicer interior materials – the interior tech is annoying

Until now, three-row luxury crossovers have been less spacious and comfortable than non-luxury models.

In contrast, the new Lexus TX is not only as spacious and practical as those cars, but more so compared to almost all competitors.

Now, there’s a good reason for that: It’s basically a Toyota Grand Highlander with sleeker paint, more plentiful features, nicer interior materials, and more powerful engine options. This may be a problem for some, but for most people, it shouldn’t be.

The combination of space and fuel economy can’t be beat among luxury models. The Lexus TX also does not give up anything in terms of luxury features and interior design quality found in other Lexus models.

Of course, it also has similarly annoying tech, most notably the ridiculous head-up display and unmarked steering wheel buttons required to operate many functions.
